How to choose your ‘evocative word’ or word of the year

Happy Christmas! Can you make some space to support your vibe for 2025 by considering your word of the year? This powerful practice can help shape our focus and intentions for the coming months

Welcome to your bonus content as a thank you being a Half Moon Member of the Sole to Soul Circle (free subscriber). If you’d like to upgrade, you’ll get a deeper dive into each week’s theme, too – this week’s is the beautiful energy clearing practise, Ho’oponopono from Hawaii.

You can also find out more in episode 38 of The Feel Better Every Day Podcast, available here, on YouTube and your favourite podcasting apps.

Here's how to choose your word of the year:

Let it emerge naturally

Don't feel pressured to use gimmicks or word searches (but feel free to enjoy them as added inspo!). Your word of the year might emerge organically from your reflections and any goal setting. It could come from an angel card, or simply arise from your thoughts about the future.

The power of evocative words

Psychosynthesis founder Roberto Assagioli encouraged the use of 'evocative words'. These words activate our Reticular Activation System, the part of our brain that heightens awareness of specific things.

Just as a new driver suddenly notices similar cars everywhere, your chosen word can bring related concepts into sharper focus.

Reflective selection

Take time to reflect on what's important to you and where you want to direct your energy in 2025. Consider:

- What you want to cultivate in your life

- Challenges you've faced and overcome

- Lessons learned from the past year

- Goals and habits you want to develop

Inspiration and encouragement

Choose a word that inspires and encourages you. It might represent:

- Something you aspire to

- An area for personal growth

- A quality you wish to embody

Remember, even great thinkers like Assagioli (who was enormously influenced by thousands of years of great thinking from Eastern philosophies) used reminders for qualities such as patience and serenity. Your word can serve as a daily prompt for self-improvement.

Here’s a picture of the cards he used to write two of his evocative words on from his house (now a museum in Florence, Italy – I’ll never forget my visit there):

You might use cards, post its, passwords, screensavers, phone wallpaper and many other methods of reminding yourself to connect with this quality.

Flexibility and support

As you consider your word, remember that it's a tool for progress, not perfection. Let it evolve and excite you. Share your ideas and final choice with others for support and accountability.

By consciously selecting a word of the year, you're setting an intention for 2025.

This simple yet powerful practice can help guide your focus and shape your experiences in the months to come.
